Mapalé, a dance performed to an African rhythm and native to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, is one of the many wonderful, traditional dances to be seen at Carnaval de Barranquilla. The dance is named after the Mapalé fish, which swims in the Magdalena River flowing through Barranquilla, due to the similarity between their pulsating movements. This incredible photograph of a Mapalé dancer was taken by the talented Jan Sochor at the 2006 carnival.
